05/14/02
NEW ALBANY, Ohio, May 14, 2002 /PRNewswire/ -- Abercrombie & Fitch (NYSE: ANF) today reported that earnings per share on a fully diluted basis for the first quarter ended May 4, 2002 rose 15% to $.23 versus $.20 for the comparable period last year.

Net sales for the thirteen weeks ended May 4, 2002 increased 19% to $312.8 million from $263.7 million for the thirteen weeks ended May 5, 2001. Comparable store sales decreased 6% in the quarter.

Once again, the entire organization responded to the challenge of protecting the bottom line through disciplined management of inventory and expenses. With the controls we have in place I'm confident we can continue to increase our earnings in the second quarter. At this point we are increasing our guidance for the second quarter EPS to $.26 per diluted share."
